» Taking your boat to India
Jul 13, 2009 - 10:16 PM - by techiemba
Do any of the members have any experience with transporting their boat to India. I have a fairly small boat (20 footer) that I would like to use in India.

I have dug up an 8 acre lake on my property in India where I will be primarily using the boat for recreational and fishing purposes.

My question is mostly about the logistics involved in the transfer process and (if) any customs duties that need to be paid in India. The boat does have a supercharged 370 HP... [Read More]

Is it possible to renew a US passport for my daughter age 6 and get it the same day?. Her original passport has expired and she will be traveling to India in two weeks. I've got an appointment with a regional passport office where they issue expedited service.

Rajahindustani : Completed more than two years in Gurgaon, India
Dear Forum members.

I completed 2 years post return in February. I had some time today and so decided to visit the forum.

Over all the experience has been positive. The positives outweigh the negatives. It has been a learning experience these last two years. I think it is better to share with you some negatives first that we encountered. So I submit the following
  • Life is more hectic in India.
I spend more time at work than in US. In US i was with a govt. funded project so my case could be different and i was living in a small place. The commutes are longer and work is more demanding.Their is more competion at work place
Post R2I you are likely to return home not earlier than 7.00PM
  • Infrastructure and traffic can make you tired.
  • Work is more challenging. but this is good in a way because with growth in India's economy more big jobs will come our way.
  • If both parents work, you have to find a reliable maid for your kid. Thank God it has been working fine so far but when my kid comes home from at around 3.00 PM I start to worry. Day cares etc are not as good or as comforting like in USA. You will need help from inlaws or parents.
  • consumer laws are weak. In India if you buy a thing and if you want to return it, then you may not be able to. their is no accountability.
  • In general laws are weak and enforcement is not done. USA is a country of laws that protect you.particularly worrysome is lack of environmental laws.
  • Root causes of a lot of problems in India is over population. The sad part is that people who badly need family planning do not practice it.Mind you their is a lot of progress that is being made in infrastructure but in a span of say 5 years if the number of vehicles doubles then what can be done. Growth in India gets divided due to population.
  • Bad management at work
Indian booses in general lack administrative and managerial skills. They will make false promises, shout of top of their voices, sometimes plead with you , be unresponsive to your needs etc etc. Exactly the opposite of what needs to be done by good managers. the solution to this problem is to get used to such stuff and not take them seriously. particularly bad departments in companies are the HR departments.
  • your R2I plans can be shattered by illnesses
About year and a half back we were shaken to our core when our kid had a fever during the time it was dengue season. those were the toughest days post R2I and thank God our kid was fine.

But over all we are in general satisfied by R2I becuase of the following
  • Sense of belonging to India
yes, this is the root cause of why people think of R2I. i have always felt that india is my real home and this where I belong. So their is a feeling of being at home which is very comforting and satisfying. In USA we had a Trishankoo mind set. I have retained indian citizenship which I feel i did good.
  • India has changed for the better
Despite all her negatives india is changing and developing. lot of problems have become a thing of the past. India's purchansing power has increased and standards of living of people are better.
A few decades back indian people seemed like a disheartened lot. These days the average Indian seems confident. Their is a sense of hope and a feeling that india may not be shining but india is poised to become a developed country in the next 4 decades. I feel that the general Indian now believes that if we can take care of some things such as a progressive goverment we can do better. (BTW i feel this UPA government is a miserable failure as it has discontinued two good projetc that NDA had done- National highways and interlinking of rivers)
  • A sense of serving the motherland
this point i could have merged with the first one but somehow I feel I should separate it. I work in the field of water and waste water treatment. I am involved in large scale infrastructure projects related to water supply and sewerage. I do feel strongly that I am working and serving MY country. This to me is satisfying.
  • parents/extended family
we can visit parents and inlaws. Grand kinds can have attachment/affection with grandparents and auncles /aunts.
  • kids will have Indian identity
This is also heartening. India's kids do have a Indian identity. They may be getting westernized but still we will alwys remain different. We do not have to force kids into Sanskrit/balvikaas classes. kids will not be ABCD and that is good.

Well these are some of the things that just come to mind I will add more later.
I am open to any questions that you might have.
BTW I feel that since this is a new forum and I see a lot new names and hence I will introduce myself- I used to be buntyvip and Rajahindustani in the old forum!

» Welcome
Welcome to R2IClub.com !

Returning to India is a dream to many NRI around the world and a plan-in-progress for lot of them. Few get lost in X+1 syndrome and postpone the plans every year until one day they realize it is not going to happen and resign with frustration !

R2I is not easy if you don't plan properly. Those who think it is easy and not plan, are planning to fail. If you think no plan is required, you don't understand how difficult it is. There are various issues like finance and investments, job search, finding a good school for kids, find a good house or apartment to settle down. No need to mention about 'reverse culture shock' you have to gothrough..

Few plan to return to the same city where they were born and have relatives and friends; some return to another city where the job opportunities are plenty. Some return for reasons of past and some for the reasons of future ! Building social network in this new city is a key for the second group of people.

There are several things we need to unlearn and learn again to go back and live in our home country. This may seem strange but there is no escape. We should get ready for reverse culture shock. Unlearning few things will go long way in making the transition smoother.

All is not easy or done after return. We might have left behind our retirement plan funds, taxable mutual funds, bank accounts. Some of us have to file taxes in more than one country, manage accounts abroad. And some of us made investments thinking long term and they need adjustments..

How much is required ? How to file taxes after return ? How do we manage the money ? How do we ship goods ? What container ? What to carry back with us ?
What school is best ? Where to live ?

Don't worry we have answers for all these questions. Not one answer, but plenty of answers, yes, all from those who has done it in real life. Listen to those who have walked the walk and ready to share their lessons with you so you dont have to repeat the same mistake, Again !

Are you worried how to develop a network in a new city in India ? Just check our R2Ier list for your year of return and find some one from your area who can be your buddy from today. It makes easier on your spouse and your kid.

Planning to buy an apartment ? Check out what others are talking about builder and its amenities. Want to know about the best school nearby for your kid ? How about finding another r2i member in the same apartment you live ?

We have message boards to discuss all these subjects and plan carefully and learn from those who already returned. Read all of them, learn from their experiences and plan your return carefully. It can't be much easier.

This is why we say Return to India - made easy !
