50+ group - Settling in India after the retirement.

srinpo;367869Good post & giving a window to this world. But can you share more info, (whatever is sharable) like, your lifestyle (are you more of outgoing with friends type, those kinds), religious nature (is pilgrimmage travel a big plus in India for you), which place, will you be settling in the new modern villas kind, or apts in big city, or 2'nd tier city, would you plan to be religiously active where you live, do you have special interest in India specific activities like classical music etc., do you have the India skills (i.e. can you on your own go to registrars office talk/bribe & get land registration done kind of stuff), would your Kids be visiting and do you envision some quality time in India with your kids families, these kind of insights. Of course you will be evolving all these as you go, so I understand even you may not know the answer fully.
Of course I would have loved to ask one more thing, but "My Roots" have banned me from doing so. Hope the above set of questions come under this thread's motive.

OP - You have asked me too many questions to answer. But no problem I will try to get to your every question on me.

I still have lot of friends back in India. For past 5 years I am been visiting India every year and every time I visit I make sure to meet most of my friends if not for all of them due to time restraint. I also have lots of close relatives as well. Therefore I still have very close nit links with my people back in India. Having said that, for me I can live happily anywhere in the world as long as I am with my wife. Accordingly I have planned how and where I live my future life. My plan revolves around my wife and therefore as long as I am with my wife I do not long so much for anybody and for anything. Like wise I do not know how I am going to live god forbidden if I have to live without my wife. Therefore do not ask me what I will do minus my wife in my life. As of now I am extremely very happy and I can say I am one of the blessed one on this planet.

I am relegious offcourse but not an extremist when comes to relegion. For me evry one is same but I only respect to a person who is good from heart and I just hate people who try to influence others on the name of relegion. Therefore these pilgrimage, mosques, temples, churches etc has no priority in my life. Like I said I only respect to a person based on his character, personality, motives and actions and not based on cast, creed, relegion and status.

Already on this forum many of you know that I am settling in a 2 tier city. I am brought up in Bangalore. But the Bangalore I lived to present Bangalore there is lot of difference and I can not live in Bangalore anymore. It is not because it is very expensive to live in Bangalore. For me and my wife we have much more than enough income to live in Bangalore but I will not enjoy Bangalore any more.

My hobbies - Cricket is number one. Even in US I spend much of my free time waching cricket on TV and now we have willoCricket which show nothing but cricket all the time. I have already purchased to watch world cup on dishnetwork. Apart from this I watch hindi movies. After I retire and when in India as long as I have strenghth I try to watch major cricket matches any where in India especially in South India.

When comes to dealing with govt employees I myself was a govt employee back in India before coming to US. I was Veterinary ext. officer and I was involved in the IRDP scheme where I was supposed to buy the animals to farmers and I have personnaly seen and experienced how the world bank aided scheme was misused by the people and shame on us for what ever happening in India in this regard. My one of the preparation to retire in India is to buy some RE in India and for this matter I already have 5 houses in tier2 city and all bought paying 100% cash and no loans. I transffered all the money from here through the NRO account I have with CitiBank During one of my visits I had bought Scarpio SUV and sold it before coming back to US. During all these times I have dealt with the registrar office, RTO etc with minimum difficulty because I know personally how to deal with these kind of people.

I do not feel compfortable living in appartments under the mercey of association and that too in India. No way I do not want to get into any kind of trouble, I would rather spend money and try to have all the comforts I need in my independently owned home. I do not want villas because I would like to live my rest of life when in India in a low profile.

Coming to kids I have one son and I love him very much. But I will not force him to visit me and it is up to him and I will not interfear in his personnal life. But either way it do not matter to me and I still love him the same no matter what.
I hope I answered all your questions. Believe me all my answers are honest and nothing artificial.

Before I end I would like to put some words out of my heart -- It do not matter where we live and it only matters how we live. Where ever you live try to live in peace and try to spread love among people irrespective of cast, creed, relegion, status etc. Than whole world will live happily. Than it does not matter much where any one live - India or US all the same.

I like it.

I think this is one the important factor for successful R2I in later stage of life.
If we avoid (intensionally or non intensionally) visiting relatives/friends when we are young and energetic giving time constraint or hectic schedule as reason, it is hard to reconnect with them later. People move on and no one waits for anyone.

cmk786, I have one question though,
what if kids expect parents help to raise the grand kids?

cmk786;367657I am been doing regular work out every day and I am been doing it for past 15 years. Lately I am doing it twice a day. 40 to 45 minutes AM and around 60 minutes PM before going to bed. I try to keep away from junk food, deep fries etc.

cmk786, care to explain your workout in this thread? Thanks

If kids expect parents help. I am ready and willing to give all my help. But look the other side of the coin. They need our help and not us.

boca2blr - I have explained my workout routine in the thread you asked.

Apart from workout I am very strict on type of food I eat. Very rarely deep fried food, very minimal oil in the food, once a week red meat. Week ends with breakfast one egg. No meat for breakfast during weekdays - only vegetables. Dinner mostly chicken, vegetables, fish. Every day one fistful of almonds, one big glass of warm water before starting workout in the morning. Afternoon meal only fruits. Every day with breakfast one cup of warm water with honey and lime. So you can see I am very strict when comes to diet.

Nice topic and I agree with some of you who have written that this thread is focused on people who are 50+ (not yet senior citizens!). I turned 50 last year and will be 51 next week. I came to India in 2008 and started a new career. I am presently enjoying it (see my story elsewhere), although I did go through a lot of ups and down trying to adjust to the Indian system after living in North America for over 27 years. I believe that the longer one lives abroad, the longer it takes to adjust here - rather simple logic.

There are a lot of things wrong in India - as I write this, I am watching on TV about the departure of Mubarak in Egypt and the "power of the people" can do similar things in India to get rid of the G family. Sorry, for bring this in this thread - but, massive corruption is the same in both countries.

I am fortunate that at IIT KGP I have a campus bungalow with minimal rent and still have 14 years to retirement (may be longer if they extend the retirement age as has been suggested). Still looking for the "ideal" retirement place - maybe Mysore? At IIT-KGP, expenses are not much even with my habit of getting "parcel food" for dinner every night (alternate between a Sardar dabba and a Bengali joint so I have Tandoori and Machi while I cook delicious sambar, rasam and mutton curry as well as paratha and bisibelehulianna!!!!)

Cheers

Even more than me (I have already crossed over. So for me if at all the interest could be the reverse - 50+ settling in America), for few others who want to R2I, but due to other reasons like their spouse not interested, Kids already aged, etc. cant R2I, this is presenting a useful information. It is not like they have missed the boat. Another chance is coming and going to present itself. Be prepared and grab that oppurtunity when it comes. In fact it could be a case of having the best of both the worlds.
