best investment for repatriable returns

It is possible that I get about $1M in USA in next 6 months out of an investment I made 10 years back.

What is a good way to invest this money in India so I can repatriate it rather cheaply if needed and still make good returns? or am I better off keeping it in USA?

I think that it would be much more secure and organized if you keep it in the US. Another option is to diversify it in to a few countries - US, India, UK, Switzerland, etc..

I am currently leaning towards Indian RE (for the money I am willing to keep in india) with FD/NRE (with rupee forward contract) for the rest but I am willing to listen to the gurus here.

tarun - congratulations on the windfall. You do not need to put it all in one basket. Create an AAP for this or factor this into your overall AAP. I would invest a slice into all of the options below with the formula 1/3:1/3:1/3::stocks:bond:real estate in the US and 1/5:2/5:2/5::stock:fixed income:real estate in India, and the US:India split can be 50:50 or 60:40 leaning towards wherever you plan to be longer term. that is reasonably well diversified.

invest in US real estate: pros: might be a good time to buy as the market is down. cons: its high-maintenance as I am now in India and it will be hard to get a mortgage without a US job
invest in Indian real estate: pros: good returns possible. also, I can possibly upgrade to a better house here. cons: not repatriable. not liquid
invest in US stock market: pros: while the near-term outlook may be bad, it will ultimately come back up. cons: that "ultimately" might be some time away. risk of currency depreciation.
invest in indian stock market or in some indian startup: pros: more returns possible than buying a house cons: more risk compared to real estate. not easily repatriable
invest in FD in NRE account: pros: interest and principle are fully repatriable. right now, I can get about 4.25% risk free and about 7% if I bet rupee will gain against dollar. cons: low returns
