We would like to inform you regarding a collision that occurred on Saturday morning between MSC Chitra & Khaleejia-3.
This has affected the berthing / un berthing traffic of all the vessels in Nhava Sheva and Mumbai Ports.
Berthing and un berthing of the vsl is suspended until further notice.
Understand from sources that all the port operations would remain close at least till 11th August (wed).
About 200 contrs have fallen into the sea and floating in the passage. There is a huge amount of oil spill around the vesse also. The cleanup process will take min 2-3 days , as per the port. The suspension could continue further, depending on the clean up speed which again depends on the unfavorable circumstances like heavy rains, rough sea or storm signals.
As of date 7 vsls are waiting to sail, and 11 vsls waiting for berth. Even if the channel is clear, to bring the berthing/unberthing traffic on schedule will take time.
There is possibility of port closing the gate due to congestion as ICD containers will continuously move in but since the vessels are not berthing to load the containers, the containers will get piled up in yard which will lead to yard congestion.
To bring in the normal schedule , there is high possibility of the port giving cut & run to the vessels.

Its a metal container transported using cranes. 2 cargo ships colliding is like two mini cities colliding, no amount of ropes how much ever tightly tied together is going to save it.
OT, love the show mighty ships on Discovery.

Collision at mumbai port
Containers are stacked in a ship on the deck, between decks and below decks in various cargo holds. To put it simply, these are like building blocks, stacked one upon the other. There are no ropes tied or any kind of lashing etc. Although no one expects them to tumble and fall off the ship, accidents such as these are devastating. The ship is tilting almost at 85 degrees and at last count more than 400 containers had fallen off the ship into the water. Some light ones are still floating (since the container is airtight and water tight), but some heavy ones have sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
