Folks,
Some silly/naive questions below -.
I am trying to find out (from physics point of view),
a) what is the relation between matter and energy ?
b) Can energy be converted into matter and vice versa ?
c) From the information I gathered ( primarily googling and talking with others), Energy is transferred through two mechanisms - wave and particle. Questions -
1) When energy is transferred, is it simultaneously transferred thro' both these mechanisms ? Or is it an 'either or' situation i.e either particle or wave ?
2) Essentially, what is the difference between a wave and a particle ?
( is particle a packet of compressed waves ?)
3) If the wave particle duality theory is true then can we say that particles do not exist without waves and vice versa ?

These questions (and a lot of other related ones) are very nicely explained by Hawkings in his book A brief history of time. You can get the book on the internet.

Thanks Hanu ! I will have a look. Additionally, I would also like to understand members' views.

I do not think "members' views " mean much when facts are concerned. An atom is an atom with nucleus and electrons regardless of member views.
So books on physics and EMWs should impart this knowledge.
Einstein's equation shows the energy / matter equivalence (read quite some time back, but I think lorentz transformation applied to kinetic energy equation yields the E = mc2 - this is just from memory, so I could be wrong)
Matter is converted to energy via nuclear reactions.
For energy to be converted to matter a huge amount of energy is needed for just a very tiny amount of matter. This has been done at accelerators at CERN and Fermi labs. Matter creation this way occurs with simultaneous creation of anti-matter. While I am not sure but the anti matter thus created may combine with other matter and the resultant annhilation creating energy - this needs to be checked with some Physics as I am just speculating and hence could be wrong.

You are spot on. I recently read Hawking's book and then thought why the hell did I not read it earlier. While reading the book, I was also constantly googling for the concepts for which I needed more information. The book is more riveting than a Ludlum :D

Members may have views that challenge existing theories.
I would be happy to know and understand those views as well.

Stay tuned, I have a different view...:D coming soon to a hijack thread near you...

I'm with Desi in suggesting the starting point.
Sometimes we may need to go without the prejudice the book may create, thats where i concur with you.
The humanity was so stupid and they dont even know how to conceptualize and channelize the idea of gravity, until Newton propounded the theory of Gravity.
It took some decades to digest a new dimention of understanding and then as usual we people got so sure about it or became stupid again. we thought, even now in india and many part of the world think, Gravity has been well defined as a force and has been proven.
Then came Einstein (a patent clerk) with a radically different proposition on Gravity saying that its not a force.. its just a result of space time dent. (ok something like that). It took decades for people to digest that. Not many today knows the space-time dent the matter creates idea...
As years passed, since Einstein, we all think there can be no better ideas and everything has been well explained and proved beyond doubt.
Needless to say, we indians genetically are blind followers. We dont like to question our own believes. Even today 90% of our populace discourage any radically different views. They dont even give room for such a possibility.
Even if you come with a cock and bull story that integrates the Einsteinian idea as well, there may not be many ears who can appreciate it.
But thats when you win.. Dont stop just asking the question go ahead start conceptualizing one of your own. Lets make our people think outside of hindu muslim confrontations. There is a world to win outside of that.

Question that comes to my mind,
Are all the 5 sensory inputs perceived as waves or particles or both (considering wave particle duality) ?
