I have Airtel DSL and a linksys 54G router. I am using PPPoE as internet connect type and entered userid/passwd password given to me by Airtel (not sure if this is the correct setup). Rest of the router settings I left as is.
I have a cable coming from DSL to "Internet" slot on the router and from router to laptop. I can't get an internet connection with this setup.
I can see my wireless available to connect but once connected can't get internet connection. Called Airtel Customer Support but they say they can't answer wireless questions....
Thanks

Need help - setting up wireless router with DSL
What you've done seems to be correct.
There are the following suspects:
DSL modem (try and connect the laptop directly to this instead of via router),
cable from modem to router (try alternate proven cable)
Linksys router - network settings (ensure DHCP server is enabled, ensure DHCP client on WAN port, not static IP),
cable from router to laptop (try alternate proven cable),
network settings on laptop (ensure DHCP is enabled, no static IP)
if you can tell what troubleshooting you've already done, we can skip the basic steps. in an anonymous forum, I cannot judge your capability.

Need help - setting up wireless router with DSL
Thanks guys
DSL modem (try and connect the laptop directly to this instead of via router)
works. even with the sunrocket VOIP connection. But I removed that connection to makesure wireless works.,
cable from modem to router (try alternate proven cable)
Cable is good. Using it now to get this connection
Linksys router - network settings (ensure DHCP server is enabled, ensure DHCP client on WAN port, not static IP),
DHCP Server is enabled. Not sure about the second part. didn't see any settings
cable from router to laptop (try alternate proven cable),
network settings on laptop (ensure DHCP is enabled, no static IP)
DHCP is enabled under Advanced TCP/IP settings.
Also all the lights mentioned by MeraNaseebR2I are working. Internet light on the router is also "Green". I opened the router setup in the IE and went to the status and clicked on the "Connect". Came back saying "Can not get IP address from POPoP server"
Talked to the Airtel support claiming it is a wired-router. He made me change Local Area network properties->TCP/IP->Properties from dynamic IP and made me enter all the statis IP's. Still did not work. So waiting for Level 2 support call.
I have not done any other trouble shooting and my knowledge of networking is pretty basic.

I am having same problem with Linksys router. It might be because the IP used on the modem is same as Linksys router IP.
I connected a Netgear router, it is working great. I bought a Linksys as Netgear one had lesser range.
I will try the instructions provided in the link above.
For Netgear I am using Static IP setup.

OP, Possibly that might be your problem. Typically the DSL Modem and Wireless Modem might be using the same IP. fix for it is to go into the configuration of the wireless modem and manually change the IP address(just the last number/s).
While you are at it, secure it with atleast a pass phrase encryption, I see too many people out there with unsecured networks.

Need help - setting up wireless router with DSL
AndhraBabu
Last year I struggled for 2 weeks with all sort of configurations, IP adresses etc. to set up my Linksys 54g with MTNL DSL in India. Nothing worked. Finally some good soul on the old R2IClub forum came to my rescue.
Here's what he suggested and what worked for me:
http://www.linksysfix.com/check/HomePage/index.htm
Restore your router to the factory default settings. Then download the EasyLink Connect utility from the page above on your PC and run it. Works like a charm!
