Top honour for Rahman

http://www.time.com/time/2005/100movies/0,23220,soundtracks,00.html

[quote]
Roja:Though he is renowned as the preeminent composer of modern Bollywood, A.R. Rahman was born and still works in Madras, 1,000 miles south of Bombay. His Tamil compatriot, the writer-director Mani Ratnam, yanked him out of jingle-writing to compose his first full score for Roja (The Rose) the tale of a woman whose lover is kidnapped by terrorists. Through this grim political parable, Rahman laced some spectacular melodies that not only serve the drama, they create their own[EM]as in the duet ballads "Yeh Haseen Vadiyan" and "Roja Jaaneman," which first are grounded in recitative, then suddenly ascend into celestial melody. This astonishing debut work parades Rahman's gift for alchemizing outside influences until they are totally Tamil, totally Rahman. He plays with reggae and jungle rhythms, fiddles with Broadway-style orchestrations, runs cool variations on Morricone's scores for Italian westerns.

Rahman is just so amazing. Heartiest congratulations to A R Rahman.

Yeh haseen Vaidiya is such melodious song. I wish if he could have done that song without SP. Compared to Chitra, SP sounds so old.

So many mesmerising numbers to choose from.

Yeh Haseen Vadiyan

Saathiya Sathiya

Kehna hi kya

Tu hi re, Tu hi re

pyar yeh jane kaisa hain

Chhaiya chhaiya

and so many more.

Speaking of Rahman, I saw Adnaan Sami recently on TV. He was so amazing at keyboard. It was unbelievable. There is a clip on Youtube as well, its definitely worth watching. If anyone is interested, search for Saregamapa or adnan sami . I have never seen anyone play keyboard that beautifully before.

My personal opinion is the Roja songs in tamil sound a lot better than the ones translated to hindi. Somehow on the whole Rehman's music works better with tamil songs than with Hindi. It could be due to the fact that many of his hindi compositions were first composed for tamil lyrics. I also noticed that he repeats some of his tamil compositions in hindi movies that are not remakes or dubbings of the tamil version.

I agree. I had a discussion with my wife on this a few days back. I think it has to do with the lyrics of the songs. The songs are very crudely translated and make zero sense while listening to them in Hindi. Its a big turn off for me. Melody with useless words is crude and quite useless because it does not translate the emotion successfully. Examples would be most songs in Dil Se and Bombay.

Roja music is good, but so are a lot of Rahman's compositions. Roja was a flagship soundtrack because it turned the Indian music scenario on its head.

I saw Nayakan and Pyaasa on the Readers Top Rated List. These movies are great, but one has to admire what a country of one billion people and 400 million with access to the internet can do for us.

This century clearly belongs to India, from a sheer numbers perspective as well.

CD,
I think, what your are saying was true for first couple of movies only, where rahman used lyricist called P K misra, and tyried to write songs which would lip sync with on screen tamil version. However with Bombay and Rangila Rahman used a lyricist called Mehboob. Mehboob wrote some beautiful songs like - Tuhi re Tu hi re or Pyar yeh jane kaisa, Kabhi dard yeh deta hai. So I quite liked some of the songs of Bombay and Rangila. Dil Se songs were written by Gulzarsaab and he has his own style, He is easily one of the best ever poets anywhere not just in India. I doubt it, if a poet like him would actually translate songs from Tamil. You could clearly tell songs like Chhaiya chhaiya had gulzar written all over them - Consider these lines for example -

Gulfosh kabhi itraaye kahin
Mehke to nazar aa jaaye kahin
Gulfosh kabhi itraaye kahin
Mehke to nazar aa jaaye kahin
Taaveez banaake pehnoon usay
Aayat ki tarah mil jaaye kahin
Taaveez banaake pehnoon usay
Aayat ki tarah mil jaaye kahin
Gulfosh kabhi itraaye kahin
Mehke to nazar aa jaaye kahin
Taaveez banaake pehnoon usay
Aayat ki tarah mil jaaye kahin
Gulfosh kabhi itraaye kahin
Mehke to nazar aa jaaye kahin
Vo yaar hai jo imaan ki tarah

Long time ago I read Mani Ratnam interview about bombay , and he said that he explicitly told the song writer not to worry about lip sync when writing songs, as picturisation was done for tamil version of the songs. Instead he wanted meaningful songs, so that songs would do justice to amazing tunes. He was saying that public would watch the song on screen only once, but they would be listening it lot more times and he wanted that to be perfect.

Thanks for the insights. I will have to dig the lyrics to make my point. Some of lyrics from Dil Se did not make much sense at all and I am quite surprised that Gulzaar saab penned them.

Bombay songs were outright ridiculous from a lyrics standpoint, esp. Hamma hamma and kuchi kuchi rakma. Any films made in another language first and dubbed suffers the same fate to a certain extent. Though I am not sure if Bombay was dubbed.

Yes quite agree with you about Hamma hamma and kuchi kuchi rakma. But you have to agree tu hi re was superb with lines like "eek aankh roye to duji bolo soyegi kaise bhala" . I am not sure if Bombay was dubbed either. I think they shot 2 versions for diaglogues etc., but didn't bother repicturising songs, songs were kept same in both versions but I might be wrong.

I think I know which song in Dil Se you are refering to. I think in one song they kept tamil lyrics in half of the song. Here is a very good site for hindi lyrics. http://www.hindilyrix.com/title.html
