Timing of abandoning GC - Dec 2016 or Jan 2017 - tax implications
[QUOTE=arnb;671652]Don't intend to hijack the thread, but genuinely curious. Why did you hold a GC for 7 years, yet never naturalized as a citizen. If you don't mind, what circumstances made you hold on to your Indian passport, despite the convenience + benefits US passport + OCI provide? This is a ...

Timing of abandoning GC - Dec 2016 or Jan 2017 - tax implications
@sjc2pnq I followed case 2 in my post above. I surrendered GC in Jan 2017 before my first Indian paycheck that year. Hopefully my tax return is simple. @dheeraj1974, I was in 2 minds, so I did file FBAR in 2017, but I don't think I have to file FBAR any more now from 2018 onwards. @dheeraj1974, I am ...

MT: US Tax for NRA (Non-Resident Aliens)
Thanks bmukherji. My understanding was that to tell the custodian that my Rollover IRA withdrawal is ECI and to prevent 30% withholding I need to file W8-ECI (not W8-BEN) And that by filing W8-ECI (the IRA custodian will not withhold 30%, but some % that I specify) (I know I can claim any extra ...

MT: US Tax for NRA (Non-Resident Aliens)
Thanks bmukherji. You have raised valid points. I think I will just mail the forms on Jan 1st, 2011. 1. So for W8-ECI, what should I fill in field 5. where it asks for "Business Address in the United States"? (Looks like they assume that we have US Business address for income to be effectively ...

MT: US Tax for NRA (Non-Resident Aliens)
Hi bmukherji, Bobus, other Gurus, My r2i date is coming near (Nov 1st) and I have 2 accounts left to whom I need to change of address and send W8 forms. 1. Fidelity Rollover IRA (contains my 401K) 2. Schwab brokerage containing common stocks. Question: 1. Referring to Bobus' remark in #74 in this ...

MT: US Tax for NRA (Non-Resident Aliens)
Thanks bmukherji. 02. Yes I pass the substantial presence test. So that means I will have to include my Indian income (December's salary) in US tax return for 2010. But then I will also have to include December-India-salary in India tax return for 2010-11 (my status is NRI for that) 1.How do I avoid ...

MT: US Tax for NRA (Non-Resident Aliens)
Thanks for your reply bmukherji. Now I understand both IRA and capital gains taxation for NRAs from the threads in the forum. But one thing is not clear to me yet. When do I file W8-BEN with by bank, brokerage, IRA custodian? I r2i in Nov 2010 (am a California resident for 2010). I will be NRA from ...

MT: US Tax for NRA (Non-Resident Aliens)
Please let me know if the following is the reason that capital gains from stock sales are tax-exempt for NRAs Just read Pub 519 pg 21: If you were in the US for less than 183 days during tax year, capital gains (other than gains listed earlier) are tax exempt unless they are effectively connected ...

Hi, After going through threads in the forum and understanding the two ways of IRA withdrawal from Bobus(ECI +nonECI) and bmukherji(all ECI), I decided to call and email IRS. Response on phone call to IRS: The lady pulled up pub 901 pg 35 and from the table, she said that for India tax treaty, t[B ...
