ToR at Delhi airport - duties on PS3, home theater?

Post by audia423 »

We're returning in July, and planning to take all our stuff with us as checked baggage. Our baggage will include mostly household goods and some used electronics items such as playstation 3, sony home theater system, and xbox 360.

Since we will have about 10 bags with us, I'm certain that the guys at Delhi airport customs will stop us to inspect our bags. I will be claiming transfer of residence, but wasn't quite sure what to expect there.

I've already gone through the link:
http://www.cbec.gov.in/travellers.htm

It looks like these electronics are dutiable, but to calculate the duty, what price will they go by:

1) current market value in India
2) current market value in US
3) Our receipts.

I'm also not sure how this will work. Should we try and go through the green channel, and if they stop us then file for ToR?

I've looked through the forums here, but couldn't find these specifics. Please point me to the answers if these are already posted.

audia423,

I suggest you DO NOT go thru the green channel but meet the customs PRO or any Superintendent on duty and tell him that you are on TR. They will assess duties as per the rules. If you have receipts then you should produce them if required else customs will take current depreciated values for all the items.

Hope this helps

OP,
Do you know how much would be the charge for additional baggage. We are family of 2 + 2 ( kids 5 and 2 ) so was wondering just to make it easy to take all of my items along with us when we fly. Is there a restriction as how many bags can we take with us ( even after paying additional baggage fee).

Thanks

Most airlines charge $150-$250 per additional bag of 50lbs or less, upto 3 additional bags. (I think AA charges $150, Lufthansa $250, don't know about others..). After that, the per bag fee increases, and some airlines may not even allow more than 3 additional bags.

Also, I called them and they said that they can't guarantee that you'll be able to check-in extra bags. If the flight is full, they may not allow extra bags.
