Which Airlines? Assuming you didn't buy the tickets separately for the domestic leg on a budget airline, you will take a free shuttle from international to domestic airport. It's a 15 min ride. But give yourself an hour for the transit. But you need to check out luggage/clear customs and carry your luggage in the bus. There'll be some help to load/unload from the transit bus. The transit bus starts from inside international terminal. So do not venture out.
At the domestic terminal, you need to go through the bag check-in again. This was my experience with Air -India.
Jet had a check-in counter for transit passengers at the international terminal itself in Mumbai. I'm not aware of their arrangement in Delhi.

I travelled through Delhi by British airways. I landed in Delhi by Kingfisher from Hyd (domestic terminal). there are KF ececutived who directed to take transit bus to get into international terminal. we need to wait for sometime.
plan in such a way to have more time during transit because when my wife travelled there was a huge crowd in bus and also in international terminal.. there were more departures at that time. so plan accordingly.
I transferred luggage from domestic to international terminal and checked in again. same with my wife as well. make sure to have enough time.

With Jet airways, you don't have to haul yoru luggage to domestic terminal at Mumbai...you simply hand it over to their guys at the international terminal.
I am travelling to Delhi by Air India ...landing at terminal 3 and then taking domestic flight from Terminal 1. Hopefully the transit to domestic airport is not very bad.

Spoke too soon. Looks like AIr India will be operating all of their flights, domestic and international (AI and IC) from Terminal 3 of New Delhi Airport.
Thats a good news for all of us Air India travellers.
