Hi,
What an excellent forum! Thanks to all who are contributing to this forum and sharing their experiences/information with others.
I'm r21i in june 2009 and currently my 2 kids ( 7year boy and 3year girl) are in Mumbai applying for admissions etc. It's seems to be totally unpredictable what the outcome will be of all these applications that I have put in Mumbai schools (mostly south mumbai schools).
Can you give me some suggestions, hints on how to go about ensuring that my kids do get the admissions. It's been quite nerve racking so far - not knowing whether they will get admissions.
Thanks a lot.
DSB

What towns/schools are you looking at ? I guess where you be living.
We are r2ing in March and my son starts LKG in June 2009. We took provisional admissin in Thakur International in Borivli. The confirmation is pending the interview. As soon as I go to mumbai, I am supposed to take him for an interview. we wanted vibgyor (we will be in andheri) but they have some funny afternoon timings for LKG. So I choose to put him for 1 year in Thakur.
Let me know what schools u are looking at and what grade ?

Good Luck with that. I am from Andheri so I know the schoold around that area. I am sure your son will do well. Guess we parents are more worried about the test than kids :-)
Nice to see some from NJ going back to Mumbai. We are from Nj also.
Are you and your wife in IT ?

Thanks! You are right we worry more than the kids themselves. But I guess it's better that way. I wouldn't want my son to be all nervous.
Yes I'm in IT and my wife was IT too. But after the kids, she became a housewife.
How about you guys? IT?

Feels good to see someone returning to Mumbai. Not many people in this forum are from Mumbai it seems. Please share your experience with school admission. We are planning to return in another 2-3 years. When I talk with other family members in India, it seems that the education system is very different from here in US.

Sure will let you know. The parent-interview that I had last week went fine.
In one school, we also had to attend a group discussion with all other parents who had applied for 3rd Grade admissions.
Will let you know on the written tests. With all these interviews/group discussions etc. it feels like I'm applying for my own admission to some management school. :)

That sounds interesting. Wondering why are they doing GD for parents. Please also let us know how much is the fees in school. Was your son comfortable with their process? My son is in the third grade right now and I'm not sure if he can handle Indian education system. It seems there is lot of homework everyday and tuitions etc.

GD was done only in one school, this one has IB curriculum - so I suppose they wanted to see the 'class' of parents that are behind the kids.
My son hasn't gone through the interview or test yet. Will be going for the test on 14th and then I will let you know.
My daughter (applied for LKG) has gone through and 'obversation session' in one of the schools. Bascially they had her in a room and gave her some puzzles , coloring pages etc to see how she did. We were told after the session was over that 'she did well'. And now the school will contact us shortly. Shortly was undefined.
Keeping fingers crossed.
Fees:
For IB Curriculum : it's about 1 to 1.25 lakhs per year per student
For ICSE curriculum: it's about 40,000 to 60,000 rupees per year per student.

dsb,
I am from IT and my husband is in research. They mostly work on DOD sponsered defence related research. I have been working here for almost 9 years. After 2 kids now I decided to quit work for a while when I return. I am nervous to leave a very good job and decide to stay home. Not sure if I can handle it. But I do want to give it my best shot. My younger one is less than a year old so I can spend a few years at home. Maybe do something non-IT later. We don't know what my husband will find in Mumbai. There is no research there and certainly nothing much that is govt projects. thats our big concern but he is here in the US until end of the year atleast. Also I am a bit worried about his work hrs. Right now he works 5 mins from home and we both get home before 6. There in mumbai I have heard that work times are very long. We'll see I guess. There is only one way to find out...take the plunge.
We'll try to keep in touch. When are you planning on shipping ur container ? We don't have much, just a few boxes of kitchen stuff and books. I haven't thought what to do but will land up getting the container I guess at the end.
GL with the admissions.
