Please don't add the Dr. prefix, it is an insult. Zakir Naik is known on the internet as Joker Nalayak (or Zoker Nalayak). Such is his great knowledge about Hinduism etc.

He is a cheat. Don't provide any free publicity, please.

I know for a fact that he is a medical doctor, a post graduate in medicine at that.
I have heard a couple of his talk on TV and I thought (I might be wrong), he was trying to see some commonality in all religions, and sounded to be well versed in koran and his interpretation of it (koran), sounded to reconcile it with modern times (I may be entirely wrong).

This is absolutely correct. He does talk about common thing which are good in every religion to unite human unlike individuals who want to criticize him (especially by quoting him out of context) to divide human. His talk was relayed live on Peace TV which was is heading to be one of the most watched channel in the world in religious category.

Anways you can see his talk where he address Oxford University students at youtube

Depends on the debates you have watched. He is an excellent orator can memorize and quote garbage from anywhere.
I have seen him ridiculing Hindu Vegeterianism :)

The talk you are referring by Dr Zakir Naik was on the topic "Is Non-Vegetarian Food Permitted or Prohibited".
Vegetarian society chap believes people should not consume non vegetarian food and they gave their viewpoint.
Dr Zakir Naik argued that people can be a good human being irrespective of whether he is a vegetarian or non vegetarian there is no problem in having non vegetarian food.

There was no Hinduism in there.... Hinduism and Vegetarianism is different religion. Majority of Hindus eat non veg food.

You can watch the talk again at youtube
