People have an un-resistible desire to believe in something. As humans, we get easily persuaded by anything because we have a desperate need to believe in something. "Ordinary" people just cannot tolerate long periods of skepticism, or of the empty feeling that results from a lack of something to believe in.

I would say "ordinary" people who are believers are lucky or blessed because they are not mentally tormented in that department. Another problem is most us think or pretend that we are not ordinary people.

I do not get an empty feeling.
And I do believe in a lot of things. I believe in reality that is present and evident. I believe in love. I believe in exploring things logically and scientifically. No feeling of "emptiness" either.

As for believing and pretending to be not ordinary, I know that I am an ordinary person in a group or class so people that is extra-ordinary than the general population.:)

I did my research and double checked both your locations. You are from Chicago Suburbs and Dovahkiin is from Suncity. So between you two, you got to be the cooler guy unless Dovahkiin moves closer to the north pole :))

Among people who call themselves atheists, very few are actually atheists. It's more like a fashion statement, just like people with overzealous display of religion.

I never had problem with people following any religion as long as they respect others right to follow their religion and don't create any kind of problem, Alas these days overreligious people are becoming troublesome. In my city, If we go back few decades only two religious Juloos (Parade) were happening every year one on 'dev jhoolni' and other on Moharram. Nowadays there must be 100 of them each year.

In my opinion atheists can be broadly divided in 2 categories, first one are those who are tired of organized religions working as greedy corporate or having mob mentality, hatred toward other communities etc, So some feel to maintain distance from religions. I was born in an educated, liberal Hindu family and when I grew up and I felt, Islam is religion for me, Today I believe everything I need to believe But I am not practicing (which is nothing to be proud of)

Second ones are those who fancy themselves as man of science, they think they are too smart for being religious, there is arrogance in that. Most of great scientists believed in some form of religion. Science fiction also played its part, I have studies astrophysics and space a bit and trust me THERE IS NO CHANCE that humans would find as life friendly planet as earth and go and live there. In fact, If one studies events since big bang to today when on a rocky life friendly planet an intelligent species talking about this, is like having 53 aces in a deck of cards. So many coincidences happened in favor of a planet which will be able to sustain as diverse complex life forms.

Recently a group of scientists in a computer simulation of all the possibilities of planet formation since big bang (Some Billion trillion planets formed in simulation), Now out of this few billion trillions planets not a single one evolved as Earth, That means there is zero possibility of a planet taking development path of earth according to present knowledge of physics. Microbial life might be present at many places, but not complex intelligent life forms.
