I am wondering what has happened? Are the other teams detirorating? Because, the interest for hockey in India has only come down in the recent years. In any case, this is a commendable achievement!

The skeptic in me says the win would be much more impressive if the win was abroad than in India.

The interest in hockey or any other sports may have come down thanks to the TV and news media which is always fixated on cricket. Our hockey team has worked hard and deserves this victory and it is about time the media turns its spotlight on this worthy national sport relieving the public overdoze of cricket.

Regardless of where they won, victory is victory.
Let us not forget that India was one of the best hockey teams in the world before the advent of astroturf. Unfortunately the team was not quick to adapt and mold their game and style of playing. They got their butts kicked. Past is past. Now hopefully, it is time for payback. congrats to Joaquim Carvalho and his boys.

Absolutely agree.
Also we need to make other sports economically attractive by getting appropriate sponsorship. May be one idea is that BCCI shares some of its income with other sports.

ICL players cheer on hockey team
>>> The Chak De effect certainly worked its wonders on Indian Hockey with India beating Japan in the semi-final of the Men's Asia Cup on Saturday.
Cheering India on in that match were a special audience - the players of the Indian Cricket League.
"I saw the first match, but then we wanted a break from cricket, so we came here to cheer up the hockey team," said Deep Dasgupta, former India player.
Another player Reetinder Singh Sodhi said, "I've been watching hockey since I was a kid. It's a very exciting game and players like Sandeep and Prabhjot are known to me."
Currently undergoing a fitness camp, the fitness of India's hockey players not only impressed but also inspired ICL's new recruits.
"Their fitness is fantastic, they are matching with Japan and Korea," said Dasgupta.
"India and England have an important game, but inspite of that, we had made a plan that we would go to cheer the Indian hockey team," said J P Yadav.
It speaks volume for the ongoing popularity of hockey that even cricketers came to see this semifinal on the same day as the Lord's one-dayer. One supposes that's what happens when a team starts to win >>>>
There is some chak de effect of the win, hopefull it's not shortlived
Suniel Shetty is thrilled

Talking about rewards: Indian Hockey Federation has declared a team bonus of Rs. 1000 per goal scored in the Asia Cup. Yes, there is no typo in the amount I mentioned.
Oh BTW, the federation has not yet decided whether they will deduct the same amount for any goals scored against the Indian team.
