Do companies count the 2 years of MBA (or PG) as work ex

Post by openview »

I am in the process of R2I & was wondering what is the general consensus about this?
I have an MBA from Tier 1 school in India (not IIM/ISB but top 20 in most surveys). I have 12 years of exp (1 prior to MBA & 11 after).

So, the question is, will I be considered "with 12 years exp" or will I be categorized as "14 years exp" when it comes to compensation? FYI, I am in Project Mgmt, Delivery & Engagement & so I believe the MBA is totally relevant to my work.

Help/Opinions/First or second hand experiences???

2 yrs at Business School is not counted towards your work experience but companies do value the critical business thinking business that you will bring to the job.

Most of the IT services company's do count 2 yrs full time(only) MBA experience towards the overall experience but this is only relevant for 3-9 years experience slot. Beyond that and especially or 12 years range its not relevant as compared to quality/relevance of your experience for the position.

For 3-9 year experience range:
this is an interesting point because for most of the positions (which requires an MBA) MBAs are competing with MBAs so it doesnt really matter. For some roles/profiles a pure BE may be competing with an MBA and for this due weightage is provided to 2 yr full time MBA study. E.g BE with say 5 yrs of six sigma experience will be considered equivalent to MBA with 3 yrs of six sigma experience.

For 10+ experience range:
A full time MBA should have already provided your the differentiation in experience, so it really doesnt matter here. Also for Middle management roles like Delivery Managers 12 or 14 years will not make a great difference in package if any at all. What will make a difference is the value you bring to the table for the position which is purely based on your previous profile and experience (where you must have already achieved a differentiation due to an MBA degree).

What about 2 years of M.S. degree? Will it be counted towards work experience?

Anyone with programming practice can do job in IT. None of the application programming jobs (retail, finance, etc) really require M.S. Only core software development do (Microsoft, Intel, etc.). I am wondering how are IT companies value M.S. esp in Computer Science.
