Rental Car in India

Post by Dil_Ki_Suno »

I am r2ing in a week from now and am thinking of renting a car (Self driven) for a while in India before I decide to buy one. I will be working in HYD and will also be visiting Delhi. Any idea on how to go about making a car reservation? Online? Phone? Or should I reach India and then contact them. Is it very expensive to rent a car?

Also I am planning on taking driving classes to get used to Indian roads and also learn stick shift. Any suggestions on good driving schools in HYD/Delhi.

Any help will be much appreciated.

You get rental car (Indica) with driver for Rs 600/day (8hrs+80km). Check with local taxi stand. Dont know of any self driven car rental company.

hertz and avis rent self drive cars, they are MORE expensive than with a drivefr. friend of mine rented for a month for rs. 30k, an esteem in chennai 2 yrs ago. If stick shift bothers you, buy a santro or city automatic.

Take a taxi/rickshaw to work for the first few days. take classes at a driving school and get your licence. Look for a used car so you get used to driving in Hyd and later you can buy a good car.

>>>You need to make use of 4 sets of eyes and 4 sets of ears to drive in India.

Two of those should be at the back of your head. Also it helps to have a sharp spear or some stuff like that to keep other vehicles coming very near to you. Just a light poke will be enough :)

Thanx guys for setting my expectations right. I will go for a car with driver and then will enroll to un learn US driving and learn India driving. Anyways I gotta learn stick shift.
Howz the traffic condition in HYD? I have been to B'lore and Delhi in last 2 years. I know Mumbai traffic too. So any comparisions? I was hoping HYD traffic will be much better. I am not from HYD so please pardon my ignorance.
How is the local transportation?

Thanx guys

talk to the travel agent companies, they normally have cars available at rates lesser then rental car companies. 6 years ago I had hired such a guy who had an Amby.. was interesting to be chaueffered to work when everyone except the big guns came in cars with drivers or were bussed
