Software to manage your investments?

Post by MunnaBhaiNRI »

I have been using Quicken(desktop version only, no online version) since 2004. Very impressive. Each year I update my quicken to the latest. Its worth of the money if you use it properly.
I will have the Quicken application installed on my personal desktop and office laptop, maintain my personal quicken file(the file with my information etc) on a USB thumb drive. I fix this USB drive to any one of these two computers to access my files. This way I can make sure that my personal files could be accessed from anywhere and secured in my thumb drive. What happens if I lose my thumb drive? I may lose the latest changes from my last updates. But the file in the thumb drive is password protected and encrypted(from Quicken 2010 onwards, its a single file, you cant break into that).
I never use ANY ONLINE resources to keep my personal information on their servers(Quicken online, Mint what not...)

One good part of the Quicken is you can mix and match Indian and US accounts in their respective currencies. But you cant auto update your Indian accounts online since Indian financial firms wont support the Quicken updates online.

I've tried MS Money at first years back, didnt like it. I got a free Quicken copy when I was buying turbotax in 2004, I tried it and got addicted to it.
Now I can manage all of my fiances in a single click. I have entered all of my previous years financial transactions into Quicken since I started with my first salary. its pretty good, you can budget, you can see what happened so far and what is your future expenditure etc..
At first its really boring to be get used to the Quicken, but once if you are able to get the things properly lined up in it, you will see the attractiveness in finding every piece of finance properly controlled by you.

MNBhai,

I too was initially hooked onto Quicken. I have outgrown it now. Online updates come up with some problems every now and then. The files become rather unwieldy. The only use of Quicken is when you are doing your turbotaxes. I have been using quicken between 1997 (Quicken 3 or something?) to 2010 - I am kind of phasing it out now...

I am quite comfortable with cloud computing and mint.com. Actually, the passwords arent a big deal these days. You can change them easily in case of fraud, etc. All those online services use yodlee engine. I now use yodlee for the Indian arm. I guess its a matter of preference - I dont really see cloud computing for email, contacts, finance, etc, etc as a big deal these days. Passwords usually are typically encrypted well.

I dont use Quicken in conjunction with my TurboTax. I have never itemized my deductions so far, so, I just use my yearly financial statements and prepare my taxes.

My Quicken file is also exploding. I add all of my eStatements to the Quicken, all check copies, all of the medical bills etc to the Quicken. I will break the file into two separate decades so that its size is reduced.

I never had any issues with connectivity of my online updates etc so far. Only when a particular financial institute upgrades/changes something at their end, I might have come across (just once or twice) issues in online sync up, but overall its good.

Hi,
Did anyone use mint.com to manage finance? Site seems to be very cool with useful functionality. However security seems, to be a big concern. Please share your thoughts.
