Dear Friends,
I am a naturalized US citizen and currently residing in India.
I am also planning to search for a job from India. Hence, for the ease of attending telephonic interviews from the employers based out of US, I am wondering the possibility of obtaining US Telephone number which will route the calls from that number to my Indian mobile number or land number. At the same time, I hope it wont be that costly for me either.
Please advice this possibility or any related possibilities and how to obtain such facility.
I hope that way it will be cheaper and easier for them to make a telephone call.
Alternatively, I can use skype or google chat
Regards!

Vonage is probably your best option. $15 per month for 6 months, then $25. Calls to any number in India and US (along with ~ 60 countries) is free and talk time is unlimited.

My inlaws have been using Magic-Jack from India for the last year. They have a local Bay Area number, it works beautifully from India. Only downside is that you need to be online (computer powered on) for the phone to be working.

Get a PAP2 Voip Adapter, Gizmo sip number and Google Voice number. Add PAP2 to your internet connection, configure it to use the SIP number from Gizmo. Add Gizmo number to Google Voice. Give out Google Voice number to people.
No monthly fee, the PAP2 does not need a PC to connect to.
Just one time cost of buying a PAP2 device. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&q=Linksys+PAP2&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=16611719490565336322&ei=zYrkS_ynHMT48Aa3gLXsDA&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDEQ8wIwAg#ps-sellers .
You can also use old voip provider box if you can unlock and hack it.

The best bet would be,
get the VOIP pieces like, either Nettalk ( TK6000 ), or magic jack ,
get assigned the U.S. phone number to it and take it to india with you.
All of your U.S. friends can dial you as local number, ( you will have to keep the computer ON during night/day time, when you think, probably your folks are calling you -
even if, you are not on line ( for magic jack and nettalk ) the voice mail mssg goes to your e-mail which you can check later.
For piece like nettalk, it does not need to be hooked through computer ( if you don't wish to ), needs just the router /cable box to tie-in. So all of your U. S. buddies, can dial you there in India as a local number.
Unlimited talk, No taxes, No monthly bills.
If you can carry ooma phone with you to india, that would be even more better, and all U. S. people can dial you like a local phone. ( again no need to keep computer turned ON )
I have all the three above said VOIPs
and have three diff. phone numbers for a while and paying no charges / no monthly billing / no taxes .
Nettalk is the best choice ( for India ) , since it is a small compact piece you can carry easily in a pocket anywhere in the world and all of your U. S. relatives can dial you like a local phone,
once attached with the router or cable box or the PC , there in India.
I liked ooma and nettalk a little more , due to their clear voice
and no need of computer being turned ON, at all.

One other idea could be of that Belkin phone,
but for that, it should have the same services on both sides, like google phone and skype voip services. ( hence, NO good. )

Obtaining a US Telephone Number that will route calls to my India Number?
We have vonage...its works great. Dh took the plunge and invested for the google phone. I have yet to figure it out..but it seems like an iphone (all the apps and stuff)..and we do have a US dialing number. Which will make it easier for those in the US to call us. We thought it was best to have a USA phone number and when we get there take on an indian line.

Dear Friends,
I went with Vonage and got the US phone number.
But the problem is I was not able to forward the calls from US number to India mobile number.
I did tried configuring using the call forwarding feature in the features tab of www.vonage.com , but I am getting the following error message
******
Error!
The following error(s) occurred:
International dialing is currently disabled on this line. You must enable this feature before setting up international call forwarding
******
This is in spite of the fact that I tried “Enable/Disable International Calling” feature in the feature tab and I got the message “Your settings will take effect within a few minutes”
But nothing is happening…
When I called the customer service rep, she mentioned that I would need to install anequipment and keep the Internet ON to receive the calls in my India mobile number forwarded from US number. However she did mention that for the calls that needs to be forwarded to a number with in US, the installation of the equipment is not needed…
Also I got an email stating that they have shipped the equipment to my friend's US address that I provided to them... since they told that they cant ship it to an International address.... I have also requested my friend to mail it to my Indian address... I hope that I receive the equipment soon
Please help/advice on what should be the steps that I need to take to ensure the calls are forwarded from Vonage US phone number to my India mobile number or India land number.
Does this mean that you guys also went through all these to receive the calls routed from your US numbers
Regards!

I think once you receive equipment you can hook up to internet and activate it. Or just ask your friend to do it. Once its activated, you do not have to keep it online to be able to get calls forwarded. When I didn't have internet at home for few days, I used call forwarding feature and it did work to make calls to India.
