How to Pay Customs Duty in India?

Post by purveenshah »

When you ship goods from the USA to India, customs duty may be charged before your package is released. Here’s how the process works:

Customs Assessment
Once your shipment arrives in India, customs officials review the goods, check their declared value, and calculate the duty and taxes.

Notification
If duty is applicable, you or the receiver in India will receive a notification from the courier service or India Post.

Payment Options

Through Courier/Logistics Provider: Most international couriers like DHL, FedEx, UPS, and SFL Worldwide allow you to pay duties directly through them. They handle the clearance and collect payment (cash, card, or online).

India Post Deliveries: For shipments handled by India Post, customs duty must be paid at the post office or to the delivery agent upon receiving the parcel.

Online Payment: For certain imports, customs duty can also be paid via the Indian Customs ICEGATE portal (https://www.icegate.gov.in
).

Receipt & Delivery
Once payment is made, the package is cleared and delivered to the receiver’s doorstep.

👉 Tip: Always declare goods correctly and check customs duty rates in advance to avoid unexpected charges.
