India-Russia relationship

In yet another example of Indo-russin strong ties, the cabinet has finally done something worthwhile. India has further augmented its IAF with more Sukhoi30MKI jets which will be manufactured within India.

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Security earlier this month quietly cleared one of the biggest defence orders of recent times.

The almost Rs 15,000 crore order for an additional 42 Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters would add up the total number of these modern Russian fighters for Indian Air Force to 272.

When the entire Sukhoi-30 MKIs, including the 42, are delivered to IAF by around 2018, it would become the single largest type of fighters in service, marking a huge technological transition from the dominance of MIG-21 fighters today.

A senior official said the CCS cleared the new order in the first week of June.

By the time HAL begins manufacture of the 42 aircraft sometime in 2014, each of them would cost in the range of Rs 350 crore, according to present day projections.

The new order for Sukhoi-30 MKIs comes even as attention is fully on the tender floated by the Air Force for $10 billion worth 126 MMRCA (medium multi role combat aircraft). But by the time the MMRCA enters the service, it would be the Sukhoi-30 MKI that would actually be the dominant fighter of the Air Force. And the combined contract value of SU-30 MKIs would be more than double that of the MMRCA.

The Su-30 MKI was originally contracted in 1996, when the Russian military-industrial complex was in a shambles after the Soviet Union collapsed. Its design and capabilities, however, continues to impress globally.

The initial contract was for 50 fighters, at $1.46 billion. Over the years, the numbers kept increasing. In 2000, the government contracted the licenced production of 140 of these highly advanced fighters by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Then another 40 were added to the contract.

The present order for 42 fighters was originally supposed to be 40, but two more were added to the order book to make up for the two crashed fighters. A senior official said that HAL is expected to complete all the SU-30 MKI orders by 2016-17 period.

HAL has been steadily stepping up its Sukhoi-30 MKI delivery schedules. While last year it delivered 23 of these fighters, this year it is expected to produce 28. HAL has already supplied 74 of these .

The following link is the most comprehensive that i have come across, in terms of describing the capability and implications of these jets in South Asia. (It is Australian).

Russia has shared this technology with China (MKK version) but the Indian version is most advanced of all!
"The Indian Su-30MKI is to date the most advanced Su-27 derivative to enter production and with the exception of mission avionics and software is a credible equivalent to the F-15E/I/K/S family. "
on top of this these will be licensed manufactured in HAL.

"Wow, while at it can we also restore that delusion of hindi-cheeni bhai bhai?"

It is not a mere delusion but in certain quarters and high offices their has been some discussions of having an alliance of India-Russia-China. This concept was first spoken about by ex Russian PM Yugeni Primokov and it does present a tantalizing option of an eastern military block akin to NATO.

With the US not doing enough to take India specific measures, it may even happen.of course as of now China is more of a competitor for India than a partner. One of the causes of this is the problems within India itself.

China attacked India and has gobbled up Tibet and had border wars with almost all of its neighbors and yet we think that the problem is with India itself?
I can understand why India may think China is its friend(commie bongs, naivety, stupidity, charmingly anti capitalist), but pls tell us what strategic reasons does China have to befriend India to form an alliance apart from keeping US away?

You do not understand! What I have said is that their are no friends but interests and those countries that serve their interests come close. Wishing away the reaons as stupidity naivity etc does not help.
Yes China will want to keep US away because US is supporting Taiwan and supplies taiwan with military hardware and other support. Also what I have said is that as of now China is a competitor.
India supports Dalai Lama and Tibetian refugees that irks China. India needs less problems with china as it is a neighbour and hence it may want to take some measures that will reduce Chinese hostility towards India.
The problems within India itself that I was talking about is about weak leadership.

I think we should do cultural exchanges with Russia also. They are known for their superior techical prowess and abilities in match etc. Japan, germany, russia and US are countries that we should look up to in charting the future course of our education system.

Indian airforce levels are now at an all time low. China Airforce on the other hand is 4 times larger than IAF.
This new deal along with MMRCA competition should help India to achive air dominance in this region.
