Australia Skilled Migration visa - is it worth the money and effort

Post by sprash »

I've been looking into the Skilled Migration visa that countries like Australia & New Zealand offer, where one must pass a points test based on educational qualification and experience & if successful the person is issued a 3-year residence visa whereby he can live in Australia or New Zealand and search for a job during that period. By the end of 3 years, with sponsorship from his employer he can apply for permanent residency or even citizenship.

Have you heard of this visa before? Is it worth the money and effort taken towards applying for it? I would like to hear your opinions or advice on this.

Hi,
Like many others we applied AUS Skilled migration visa and got PR last year. We went to AUS from US by holding the US job. But the AUS job situation is different. AUS treat only AUS experience. They even dont care of US experience. If you are lucky enough you will get a job in your field. Or else you need to work some labor work like working in restaurants or super markets(jobs in these are also difficult).
If one has a family then migrating with family without a job is much more difficult. Everyone shares a house with other family for cost savings.
AUS is more expensive.

Australia Skilled Migration visa - is it worth the money and effort

Hi

I live in Melbourne ,Australia for past 10 years ...Here is my take

Australia 457 visa is similar to your H1B visa , so you should have a job before you come here . The other option is applying PR , and you can do this from India. But it may take couple of years before you get it approved and again getting Job @ Australia is really a risky option (If you are with family ) . If you are single and young (Late 20's ) then yes its a good option .

Its a excellent place to live but as any place in the world , you should have job to support your life style ....

Dispree ..."Every one share a house ...."looks to be a very broad statement and is not true ...None of my friends share the house with anyone (Not now, nor before) ... they all are well settled and having great houses with great views ...

Saying that , i know students sharing a house , but thats true in any country ... I did when i was @ Singapore , a 3 bedroom Villa with 5 friends , Great time , as its a Villa and can easily take care of 5 bachelors ....

If you come down without job, my advice is don't risk it ...

I am in same situation thinking whether to apply but not sure whether its worth the effort and money. I had researched about Skilled Independent(175) PR where you need to obtain certain points(120) to qualify which looks little difficult(unless I makeup in IELTS and any other bonus points) for me now, but don't need to have a sponsporship which is a big plus. I missed the bus when they(AUS) announced bonus points for MODL skills back in 2006, as the herd at that time looked at much greener grass, and they axed the bonus points on those high demand skills in Feb10.

Questions to the forum:
1. Any good threads/sites the members over here can recommend which provide guidance on the complete process(searched here with no success) to increase our chances ?
The fees is non-refundable(~$400+$2575 this is min investment to get to know the result) so we to give our best shot.If you go with local consultancies, they can rake up in lakhs.
2. If you believe/have experienced first hand that some agencies/consultancies are worth to pay for their expertise, who do you recommend ?
3. What the members think about immigration to AUS compare w.r.t NZ/Canada/UK from ITjobs/benefits/PR process perspective(generally feedback but not to take into account the current slowdown at present)

Hi,

Our Australian PR( got in 2005) is expiring in the next 6 months. Need to ake a decision on whether to take or leave it !

Though We are not looking at the career and monetary angle( we have a well setled business and fairly comfortable saving in india) , the question that is always lingering in mind is whether our son should have a foreign base .Please share your thought . At times, we have mixed thoughts / frustrations, especially after viewing the CWG scam and all, if our son also should undergo the same mill? Since i am not working, i have the option of staying in oz and revive the oz citizenship for our son.
We also visited melb for couple of times to our disant relative place in the last two years.

Please share your opinion if oz is a good option for son for citizenship or the same old path of sending him to USA? i heard the immigation rules are being tightened year after year in oz.

The question you should ask yourself is "Why did you come to Australia 5 years back?" If the reason for that still holds good, and your priorities in life are still same, then stay back.

CWG scam, curroption etc as part of India. You have lived it all your life (except the 5 years in Australia). You know how it is. You also know what you are missing in Australia.

Decide what you want and then decide for yourself about returning or not returning to India.

As far as getting Oz citizenship to keep the doors open, you should see how long it will take for you to get your citizenship and whether or not you can defer your India move accordingly.

I wish you good luck.

What do you mean your PR is expiring ??? PR Never Expires ... what expire is your re-entry permit . So all you have to do is to get your re-entry permit and it doesn't cost you anything ??

AUS is a great place ,If you have PR then its great but for you to become a citizen you should have lived in AUS for continues 2 years (before you apply Citizenship)

So only way you can get Citizenship is to relocate to Asu , be here for 2 - 3 years , enojoy the country , Go to New zealand and other small islands around and go back .. You got your Citizenship and you can decide whether you want to come back or not after 3 years ...

Option II : Come and get your PR stamped , go back . You have to apply for a re-entry Permit immed , but the issue will be that immigration will question your absense for 5 years so you have to have some story ready and prove that you are planningto live in Aus for good..

Hope this helps
