I?m computer jinxed?or maybe this house is jinxed.. Whatever it is, my computers just don?t seem to get along with me. And this is happening mostly after I moved back to India?maybe I need to R2A. Here?s the story..

I moved back with a job offer from my US client to work from home. I had started off from US with a new laptop given from office loaded with all the features I wanted. I had worked with it a couple of weeks from US office to make sure everything is in order, since I won?t have much technical support once I reach Bangalore. I reached Blr, was on leave for first week but checked in between to catch up on work, and something seemed to be wrong with the computer. Minor annoyances, things running slow, MS office not working properly sometimes. It escalated to an extent where by the time I quit after couple of weeks it would need formatting and loading everything again if I had to work with it. That?s fine, maybe some virus had got in which I should?ve fixed right away, but I did run the scan and didn?t see anything.

Then there?s my personal laptop which crops up one problem after the other that I just cant use it at all at times. First it was the battery that was totally drained and would work only with ac adapter; which is not possible given the power offs in India. Not a big deal, got the battery fixed, then the ac adapter broke meaning once the battery is drained fully, I can?t charge it again. Got a new adapter, in two weeks that one had a broken plug but still if I jiggle it around a bit I could use it. Then one day it just broke completely and I got tired of trying to fix it took it to the repair shop. The guy there dissuaded me from buying a new one and fixed the old one and gave it back in a day. I went back with it used it that day, the next morning it was lying there dead and useless. Aaahhh?can somebody please help me?

My sympathetic husband gave me his office laptop to use while I was getting mine fixed. He had two, of which he was not using one much?buddy, u better learn to share..In two days of starting to use it some virus got in. If I type ?r?, it would type ?watru? or some such nonsense?since my login had an r in it, u can understand the pain of trying to log on..then as if that was not enough it started playing other tricks like closing the current window and stuff..

Then there are two desktops..the less said the better?one is a prehistoric one, should have been donated or sent for recycling long back but lugged it onto India thinking maybe kids can use it should the need arise. The second one is a super configuration, was absolutely fine in US, came to India.. since there was no immediate need was still in the box. Since the laptops started acting up asked husband if he could get the desktop fixed?not that I can?t do it?but he should feel useful right?well, I have no clue what he was thinking, (later he explained he did think it through before plugging)?plugged it onto 220V there was a ?Whup? and some smoke and that was it..Since it was his fault totally, send him to fix it.. called around couple of places, didn?t get a satisfactory answer..took it to Dell Support?Nope, can?t be fixed? So it?s sitting there collecting dust while busy husband hasn?t got around to figure out what to do with it..while I am thinking of unearthing the prehistoric one to see if it?ll like me?

Anyways got my old laptop back to working in a few days, this is a five year old war veteran which occasionally gets a crazy mouse running around playing catch with me. And some keys get stuck on a periodic basis to be unstuck the next day. Sometimes it gets overheated and just shuts down right when I?m typing out a reply on r2i forum?yeah, keeps me out of trouble too?So when husband says let?s get a new one, I?m worried will it be as faithful as this has been..what if it just gives up on me in two weeks and runs away..I think I will just stick with this..

And I forgot to mention, the printer that just stopped working right when I was trying to scan our Marriage Certificate (no less) and just apparently got rewired and starts printing instead of scanning if I press the scan button..

Now tell me what?s wrong here?is it me..or my house?India??? The Planets maybe? I?ve Saturn closely viewing me now, I think I should blame him?or the kitchen in the North east with my career on the stovetop.. I?m seriously browsing through a Feng Shui book on bringing some positive energy here. Maybe tell landlord to rip out the stove and put it in the bedroom, we can definitely use some fire there?

Then totally bored one day I checked on internet and found this?

Here is what i did to my wife laptop as we watch movies on that one and browse a lot.as most of the websites has some kind of malware especially desi content ones.

first formatted the entire hard drive clean with no factory software.
divided in to 2 partitions. C and D.
C has only OS and all other software's. D has any data like docs, pics, files etc.
found a vb script which creates a restore point. you can google it based on your OS.xp professional or windows 7 etc.
create a scheduled task calling this vb script and schedule it to run after you log in. you will get a message box saying restore point created. this is only for C drive as that as OS and software's.
make sure in the restore point settings that it will automatically delete the previous restore points if the allocated memory for restore points is full.you can adjust this as much as you want. this makes that you are not using lot of memory for restore points.this is by default.
that is it.whenever u have malware or virus. u can go back to the recent restore point in safe mode and restore it. this is only 5 to 10 min instead of running the anti virus or spyware running etc.even then they won't pick up lot of malwares.
your D drive is safe will all the data.your c drive will always be recent one and u do not have to install all the recent ones you have installed.
also, free anti virus Avast is much better and i use that one too.

this saved me lot of man hours fixing the computer.made it much faster as well without all the junk.

‘Half of Bangalore's ground water is unfit to drink’ reports a newspaper today. There was another story yesterday which showed yellow/green tinged water used by few families. These people use mineral water for drinking and cooking but with water prices going up everywhere they can hardly use it for all the needs like washing/bathing. The groundwater is laced with heavy minerals including high doses of chromium a cancer causing skin irritant. Many of the people in this locality have skin eruptions and it’s a matter of time before cancer develops. Additional to spending money on mineral water they also shell out money for treatment of skin conditions.

I’m appalled after reading the news. Yes, there’s always news on water shortage but seeing a homemakers hands covered with blisters and the yellow water causing it, that hit somewhere. There’s so much water being wasted in our homes. Just think about washing dishes with hand, the tap is left on while rinsing the dishes, it will be a pain to on and off it each time, right? Just the water that is wasted in my home during dishwashing will be enough for a family using that chromium water to wash their dishes. Same with showers, gardening or the simple task of washing the face in the morning, so much water running into the drain. I am starting to feel guilty about the water balloons that my kids played with and all the water used for holi fun.

When did water become so polluted? I still remember being mesmerized at the beauty of the sky reflecting in the clear water during a vacation trip during my school days to Thriveni Sangam(three rivers meeting) at Mysore. Two years later we went to the same place for a school trip and I was looking forward to seeing that beauty again. But to my dismay the water was muddy and had a greenish tinge. I remembered reading in text book about the effects of pollution and how the water would be discolored. I didn’t realize it would happen so fast. After that I don’t think I’ve seen the sparkling water reflecting the sky blue anywhere but in an isolated beach in the Caribbean. I don’t think my kids will marvel at that beauty ever in their childhood.

We live in the Garden city of Bangalore famed for its lakes and flowers. There’s a lake five minutes drive from my home. When I drive that way I make sure the cars windows are closed to keep out the stench. That lake holds all the trash from the neighborhood, and all kinds of chemicals. Sometimes I see beautiful white froth building up like a snow mountain; I wonder what chemical reaction is causing that. If restored I can imagine my kids going there to play in the sand and water and birds flying around to catch fish. Given its current condition, I am worried about those pollutants leaching into our ground water and the yellow tinged water becoming the norm of our daily life. Will it ever get restored?

I don’t think any drastic change for good will occur in the foreseeable future. It’s all talks about global warming and controlling the emissions and what not. The human race is multiplying at an alarming rate and no government can be expected to implement policies that can overturn all the harm caused so far or even control the future developments. It boils down to what each person can do to better the environment. How can we control the excessive use of natural resources in our home, control emissions from our car, dispose waste responsibly.

From my part, I’ve decided to educate my kids on controlling the water usage and the effects of dumping the industrial waste into water bodies. Our kids are the future decision makers, maybe we cannot influence the current policy makers but through our kids we have a hold on the future. I wish we can change the future and maybe at least our grand kids will see that beautiful blue reflected in the water again.

Very good solution.

MY OS would create savepoints twice a day and save 3 months worth of savepoints. I can rollback to any status within the last three months.

The 101st year of International Women?s day went by, and I really wonder what this celebration every year has achieved so far. Has this one day had any impact in helping the cause of millions of women out there looking for basic rights, equality or justice? Ask the rural woman in India or a face behind the purdah in Afghanistan when is women?s day and probably they would laugh. Is there a day like that in their life?

I?ve always been an advocate of women?s free will, but now-a-days being the home maker for a family with two kids I think that?s a lost cause. I?m forced to lean towards Manusmriti sometimes ?? Father protects her in childhood, husband during adulthood and son in old age?. The guy knew what he was talking about. When does a woman ever get a chance to exercise her free will? I?m speaking of the vast majority; at youth we are bound by tradition and family honor, after marriage we are supposed to mould to the new structure of living, and then kids come, binding us with love and clipping our wings forever. If we do try to break free and fly away we are forever looking back to the nest with longing, love and remorse. Is there any other way?

With a daughter growing up to be a woman soon, I?m confused on how to direct her. Do I tell her to work hard, achieve your dreams or do I hone her skills to build a comfortable home. Yes, I want her to be independent, never be in a position where her future is in jeopardy because her husband or son wouldn?t provide for her. But think of it, she wants to be a doctor, what do I tell her, ?No baby, that?ll leave you very little time for family, it?ll not be just the kids waking you up at midnight; but your patients in death bed.? Ok, How about IT??Don?t even think about it, you?ll be drained by all the meetings with hardly any time to meet the family?. Teacher..??Yes, maybe for elementary school, definitely not high school with summer coaching, special classes and school projects, no way?. Is that how it?s going to be? I?m glad that my Mom never said all that to me. I had ?Dream High? stenciled on my wall, and my dreams never scaled down. I went for professional Degree, got placement from college, worked for prestigious clients, got married and then? the dreams disappeared and nightmare started.

Isn?t that the same for most women? The balancing act of career and home, keeping your identity while letting the kids develop their own. After all the professional education and experience I got, now I?m back at the drawing board to see if I can chart a new path which will let me balance it right. Would it have been better if I did this earlier? Certainly not, because in India success is measured by the degree you get, B.Tech/MBBS/CA absolutely great!! Any kid with high percentile of marks is expected to go through the same route; parents run around trying to find the latest and the best field to go for. And with 95% marks, a girl tells her parents I want to learn flower arrangement and horticulture, I can sell it to the local companies and earn some money too, the parents would take her straight to a doctor and career counselor. Doctor, for checking if the pressure is getting to her; and career counselor for steering her to the bright professional path. If that girl had started that at 18, probably she would be running an established floristry business by 36, maybe exporting some to China too with lot of spare time to wipe that runny nose and maybe go for a spin on the carousel.

So, am I going to tell my daughter to start a flower shop right after college? Nope, I will let her do what her peers are doing, which will most probably be cramming for the next entrance exam. I would have actually been worried if I were in US with so many career options and young age entrepreneurship, what if she really did go for that flower shop? Will she be able to balance it right? Maybe, just maybe the world would have opened more possibilities for women and maybe by the 125th anniversary of women?s day, a career woman asking for part time job would not be looked upon as a bohemian by this high profile world. And maybe in another 25 years the purdah would be off, and shariyat would have woman?s rights written in it. Asking for too much? Maybe getting to the moon would have been easier..

Better abandon International Woman?s day, and start a Woman?s Space day, where a chosen group of 10-15 women will be given a trip to outer space to marvel at the stars and moons which was always there in her dreams. Results would be measurable and that would certainly be a day to look forward to, in anticipation of my day to arrive!

So neatly put! Hard to think of anything to say in response or anything that can even begin to look like a possible solution to the conundrum. I can only suggest that when such thoughts assail a woman she should go have a strong beverage of her choice. :)

I am doing that right now while also looking up conundrum in online dictionaries. :)
