What Happens if My Shipment Is Delayed at Customs?

Post by purveenshah »

When shipping internationally, customs clearance is one of the most common points where delays can occur. If your shipment to India (or any other country) is held at customs, here’s what usually happens:

1. Inspection & Verification
Customs officials may stop your package to verify its contents, declared value, or supporting documents. This is standard procedure, especially for international shipments.

2. Request for Additional Documents
You may be asked to provide invoices, ID proof, permits, or certificates (for items like medicines, electronics, or restricted goods). Until these are submitted, the shipment will not move forward.

3. Customs Duties & Taxes
Sometimes delays happen because duties, taxes, or import fees need to be paid. Customs will not release the shipment until these charges are settled.

4. Compliance Issues
If your shipment includes restricted or prohibited items, customs may confiscate, return, or destroy them depending on the violation.

5. Communication with Shipper/Receiver
The shipping company or freight forwarder is usually notified about the hold. They may contact you to resolve the issue quickly.

6. Potential Delay Time
Customs delays can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on how quickly documents are provided and duties are cleared.
